Despite the proliferating growth of the music streaming industry, Spotify stands on the top as an undisputed king among all. And with a library of millions of songs, it’s a holy grail for aspiring and even professional DJs.
With a few clicks on DJ apps, you can create mixed music. But things have changed since 2020, when it stopped being compatible with most third-party DJ programs. Lucky for us, a few are left, the best being Mixonset.
In the subsequent sections, I will share my user experience with the Mixonset and suggest an alternative option to mix your favorite tracks. Let’s go.
Being an iPad user, I had the luxury of using Mixonset for about a week. During this period, I explored the app and used it to create remixes I played at my friend’s bachelorette party.
Let me share my experience with it alongside some good and bad things about it so you can decide whether to use it or not.
Option 1: Mixonset (Best for iPad/iPhone)
Mixonset is a DJ app designed especially for beginners and Lazy DJs that delivers an AI-based music mixing experience.
The idea of these apps is to use AI to transit between tracks automatically and seamlessly fade away from one track to another, just like a professional disc spinner. With the latest version bringing multiple changes in the interface, I feel it’s the right time to catch up on what the app has to offer.
With the last big update (3.8), aside from Apple, Tidal, Spotify, Soundcloud, and other apps, it adds new features like “Mix control” to preset transition points, “Refine filter” to let you curate their mood or theme, and others to bolster your mixing experience.
My Experience Using the App
Mixonset developers claim to provide access to 80% of Spotify songs and playlists, so almost every title (millions of them) must be available to mix. If you ask me, I can find most of my favorite tracks and albums.
As you log in with Spotify Premium, the app authorizes and imports your playlists, magic starts to begin. Its core AI DJ tech is impressive in several ways.
In the image, you can see my playlist is imported. You can now select “smart mix”, and from the pop-up window, tap on the “smart mix” where AI decides the order of songs to mix, or if you’ve created a great playlist, tap on the “mix in this order” tab.
As you start mixing, its AI decides when to do the transition, what kind of transition to do, and it decides what kind of song matches with it.
Then, tap on the “Discovery” tab. It’s automatically set to 20%, which means the mixed playlist will have 80% of your songs, and the rest are ones that AI feels match the vibe.
You can change the number from 20% to 300% and all the way down to “not at all,” which means it won’t play anything except the ones on your playlist.
Considering my not-so-great taste in music, I found this feature very handy. The 50% of the songs it added to the finished playlist were great, and my friends were quite impressed with the vibe it created at the party.
You can also edit the songs at any time in the future.
That’s not it. The really impressive bit is when you instruct the app to play in Highlight mode. Here, it isolates the most interesting minute or two of a song and beat-match it with the next one.
It, however, works better with electronic songs than other genres. I tried mixing my list of slow and romantic music, but the experience was a tad average.
UI, UX, and Pricing
The user interface of the Mixonset was pretty basic and, as mentioned earlier, is tailor-made for beginners and even intermediates. I had free access to it, and there weren’t many ads or bloatware, and I mixed my favorite tracks in no time.
When it comes to pricing, the app works on a freemium model, so as long as you’re subscribed to Spotify Premium, you can mix your favorite playlists for free. There’s also a subscription option that provides more highlights and unlimited features.
Note: The app is compatible with Spotify Duo invited accounts as well.

Conclusion
Overall, Mixonset is a great way to mix your favorite tracks and albums for free. It wouldn’t take very long, from selecting songs to preparing a final mixed playlist.
Although the mixes in certain genres weren’t great, and Apple Music had one or two issues, considering what it offers for so less is great, making it one of the best apps for mixing using Spotify playlists.
Option 2: Downloading High Quality MP3 Files & Using Them with Mixers
Are you still struggling to mix on Mixonset, don’t have an iOS smartphone/tablet, or aren’t satisfied with the mixes? Don’t worry, it’s time to download your favorite tracks into open-source music formats and mix them.
There are a bunch of Spotify converter apps available with which you can download your favorite Spotify tracks in any format, be it MP3, FLAC, AAC, ALAC, or WAV, on your Windows or Mac computer.
The converted and downloaded songs retain 100% original sound quality alongside ID3 tags. Then, use your favorite mixer apps like DJ Pro Mixer, DJ Mixer Studio, and others to prepare a curated mixed playlist.
Frequently Asked Questions
In 2020, Spotify banned multiple DJ software from accessing its library, as it’s designed primarily for personal enjoyment and not for professional DJ use. But the compatible ones can still use their songs to create a mixed playlist, but you need a Spotify premium subscription for that.
Since its launch, Spotify has maintained its pole position by letting its users stream millions of songs for free. Tidal might not have these many songs/albums, but is better for those who prioritize sound quality.
Wrap Up!
With that comes an end to my guide. As far as my experience goes, Mixonset works wonderfully to DJ with Spotify.
But if it doesn’t and you aren’t willing to purchase a premium subscription, you may download the tracks and mix them personally. I hope the provided instructions bode well for you.
Will see you in another such guide. Till then, take care!
